Inaugurado el <strong>2 de marzo de 1927<\/strong>, el teatro represent\u00f3 una inversi\u00f3n de <strong>250,000 pesos<\/strong>, una suma considerable para la \u00e9poca. El dise\u00f1o fue obra del arquitecto <strong>A. Cabrera<\/strong>, acompa\u00f1ado por el arquitecto\u00a0<strong>Francisco Rodr\u00edguez Ubals<\/strong>, iz\u00f3 la bandera cubana en la azotea del teatro, mientras la banda municipal amenizaba el acto con sus acordes. El recinto fue bendecido por el sacerdote\u00a0<strong>Fray Julio del Ni\u00f1o Jes\u00fas<\/strong>, en una ceremonia que reuni\u00f3 a las principales figuras de la ciudad.<\/h3><h3>Aquella misma noche, el tel\u00f3n se alz\u00f3 por primera vez para recibir a la\u00a0<strong>Compa\u00f1\u00eda Hispano-Francesa de Operetas &#8220;Velasco&#8221;<\/strong>, dirigida por el empresario\u00a0<strong>Juli\u00e1n Santa Cruz<\/strong>, quien present\u00f3 la revista musical\u00a0<strong>Las Maravillosas<\/strong>. El espect\u00e1culo, escrito por\u00a0<strong>Antonio Paso<\/strong>\u00a0y\u00a0<strong>Tom\u00e1s Borr\u00e1s<\/strong>, con m\u00fasica de\u00a0<strong>Juan Bautista Vert Carbonell<\/strong>\u00a0y\u00a0<strong>Reveriano Soutullo<\/strong>, constaba de dos actos y diecisiete cuadros. Entre sus estrellas brillaron las vedettes\u00a0<strong>Mar\u00eda Caball\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0y\u00a0<strong>Tina de Jarque<\/strong>, esta \u00faltima ovacionada por su interpretaci\u00f3n de la deslumbrante\u00a0<strong>Danza de los Platanitos<\/strong>.<\/h3><h3>El teatro sigui\u00f3 forjando su historia y prestigio en las d\u00e9cadas siguientes. El\u00a0<strong>16 de octubre de 1956<\/strong>, recibi\u00f3 a una de las figuras m\u00e1s eminentes del ballet mundial:\u00a0<strong>Alicia Alonso<\/strong>, quien se present\u00f3 junto a su cuerpo de baile gracias a las gestiones de\u00a0<strong>Jos\u00e9 Antonio Sampedro<\/strong>, propietario del afamado establecimiento\u00a0<strong>La Elegante<\/strong>.
